Well, my non-participation of late has more to do with the 5:00 PM PST start time; as that's when I get off work on a good day, and by the time I get home, it's usually over.

We'll have to set a time that's convenient for most. What works best?

A big thank you to everyone that turned out for Book club last night!

It was nice to discuss our ideas on the films, to agree to disagree, and to have everyone have their say. That's the main idea behind it all: it's not about outgeeking (or outsnobbing) each other, or to get into "my Trek is better than yours" debates... it's about sharing our opinions about all things sci fi!

And it's from these lines that the suggestions for next week come:

Forum Image

"Forbidden Planet" (1956)

When Captain Adams and his crew are sent to investigate a distress call emanating from a scientific outpost, they discover only two survivors. But what has Dr. Morbius found?

Perhaps the most seminal work of sci-fi cinema of its time, Forbidden Planet would plant the seed that would grow into Star Trek. Does it stand the test of time?

Forum Image

"The Ice Pirates" (1984)

From imdb.com:

In the far future water is the most valuable substance. Two space pirates are captured, sold to a princess, and recruited to help her find her father who disappeared when he found information dangerous to the rulers. A real Space Opera with sword fights, explosions, fighting robots, monsters, bar fights and time warps.

Suggested by our own Bottle0rum, I must admit I've never seen this film. Sounds interesting though!

So keep in mind, for future requests, you need not limit yourself to Trek! See you all next Monday!

Just a friendly reminder! If you haven't seen either film, you can find them on Netflix.

See you all tonight!

I'm interested in getting in on this, however, I didn't see any subject matter listed for tonight's gathering. Making sure that the group is meeting tonight.

BTW, I watched the first season of DS9 over the weekend on Netflix. I never followed the show in the past was pleasantly surprised. I really enjoyed it very much.

Happy Hunting,

Hi Thal! You're right, and there's no subject for tonight. Last week's meeting fizzled and we had no consensus on what to watch next, and since I may not be on tonight, I slipped my mind to set up a theme.

So let's set up next week!

This is one I've wanted to do for awhile, and with a recent development, now is the perfect time!

Fan projects! CBS is one of the few IP holders that is known for letting fans get away with projects, as long as there is no profit to be gained. Last week marked the debut of the long-anticipated "Star Trek Continues" project... so let's give it a shot!

Star Trek Continues: "Pilgrim of Eternity" (Season 1, Episode 1)

From the Youtube description: Apollo returns to wreak havoc on Kirk and the Enterprise in the first episode of the new series. Michael Forest, original series actor who played Apollo, reprises his role.

I've been waiting for this for months, and can't wait to watch it!

To complement the theme, why not take a look at the other better known project? Through numerous cast changes, "Star Trek Phase II" aka "New Voyages" has been producing episodes for years, some scripted by writers from TOS, some starring castmembers from the original shows!

Star Trek New Voyages: "World Enough and Time" (Season 1 episode 3)

A Romulan weapons test goes awry and snares the Enterprise in an inter-dimensional trap. Lt. Commander Sulu returns to find himself 30 years out of place and the key to saving the crew of the Enterprise as the precarious grasp on their own dimension begins to slip.

I didn't pick their debut episode, as I felt it wasn't the best. Cawley and co. truly shine in this episode. Guest starring George Takei himself!

How do these two projects match up to each other? To TOS itself?

So let's get together on Monday, July 22nd for a different kind of Book Club! See you all there!

And Thal, if you're liking the beginning of DS9, wait until you get a few seasons in... it gets much better as the characters evolve!

Next week's Book Club suggestion comes from our own Bottle0rum! As fans of the original shows, we've all come across fan service in the game: references to specific episodes in the game's episode missions. How well do they stack up? Are the references only in passing?

Let's rewatch the episode and replay the mission to find out!

Forum Image

TOS: "Friday's Child" (Season 2, episode 11)

When the crew of the Enterprise arrives on Capella IV to negotiate a mining contract, they are shocked to find the Capellans are already dealing with those damn dirty Klingons! And after Kirk and co. find themselves on the wrong side of a civil war, things only get stickier!

More than any episode in TOS, Friday's Child showed the mentalities and values of both the Federation and the Klingons, laying the satellite state allegories on thick!

Forum Image

STO: "Saturday's Child" (The Romulan Mystery episode line, episode 5. Fed only!)

When you're ordered to a backwater system (escorting a familiar face) to broker a deal for a rare commodity, the Klingons decide to crash the party!

How do they stack up? See you next Monday!

Next week's Book Club goes into territory most of us quite like... the Mirror Universe!

Forum Image

ENT: "In a Mirror, Darkly..." Parts 1 and 2 (Season 4, episodes 18 and 19)

Yes. skimpy T'Pol and Hoshi catfight. Love it!

When a secret Tholian project is discovered by the crew of the mirror NX 01, Commander Archer seizes the chance to take control of the Enterprise.

One of the best two-parters in ANY Trek series, In a Mirror is the perfect starting point for all those that have wanted to give Enterprise a try... but are unsure about liking it much.

And thanks to youtube, you don't have to worry about not having netflix or DVDs:

Part 1

Part 2. These are the FULL episodes, not just clips. Enjoy... and see you Monday!

On one hand I have to disagree with this as a starting point for Enterprise. Without any familiarity with the series, you wouldn't have the full impact of watching these actors play their opposite characters so well. You might think Captain Archer is a buffoonish caricature, for instance, and decide not to watch any more of the series. As a starting point, I might recommend "Dead Stop" (204) and "Regeneration" (223) as a set, for their tie-ins with other Treks.

On the other hand, this IS the best of Enterprise. They made it a 2-parter in order to have the budget and the time to tell a great story and establish an alternate history while they told it. This was the 700th Trek story filmed, and the only one to take place entirely in the mirror universe. The entire film crew went all-out for this last big production before the finale and it really shows.

On the gripping hand, if you're a TOS-only fan and only see one Enterprise, THIS IS THE ONE.

Thanks for an awesome Book Club night, guys! Our discussion of all things Mirror ended up getting a bit sidetracked.... but isn't that our hallmark by now?

Next week we revisit TNG as Book club proudly brings you Elric's Pics (TM)

Forum Image

When the crew of the Enterprise seek to negotiate an end to raiding by a group called the Gatherers, murder threatens to destroy the fragile peace!

How far would we go for revenge and ethnic hatred?

TNG: "The Vengeance Factor" (Season 3, episode 9)

Forum Image

TNG: "The Hunted" (Season 3, episode 11)

Angosia III, an applicant for Federation membership, seems like an idyllic, utopian society. But you know what they say, when things are too good to be true.... As an escaped convict war veteran shows the Enterprise, the Angosians haven't quite been able to put the past behind them.

I hope to see all of you next week for a pair of thought-provoking episodes that deftly cover some poignant social issues. See you next Monday!

Next week's Book Club requests come from two newcomers to our meetings... welcome aboard!

Still not sure just what the frag Book Club is? Have a click right over here: http://tosfleet.guildlaunch.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=9298596&gid=205090

All fleeties are welcome!

Our first suggestion comes from Christian Blade, and has to do with the upcoming baddies in STO, the vaunted "first seen in Voyager" species.

Forum Image

Voyager: "Distant Origin" (Season 3, episode 23)

An ancient race descended from the dinosaurs of Earth whose technology surpasses our own? Meet the Voth (which is a funny way to spell "Silurian", but I digress) who deny their earthly origin... until an archaeologist discovers a human skull, that is. As Voyager is captured by those who would hide the trust, what can Chakotay do to save his crew?

The only episode ever to feature this species, it's actually a lot more interesting than most Voyager episodes. It'll be nice to see how STO completely changes their backstory :D

Our next request (courtesy of Tannlore) changes gears and lets us peer deeper into the culture and society of one of Trek's favorite species: the Vulcans!

Forum Image

Enterprise: "The Forge" (Season 4, episode 7)

When a terrorist attack destroys the Earth embassy on Vulcan, Archer wants answers NOW, dammit! But as the truth gets murkier and a coverup is discovered, the investigation takes a new turn. Why are the Vulcans so eager to blame the Syrrannites? What treasure do they possess? If you've ever wondered why the Enterprise Vulcans could be so illogical, this episode will start you on the road to understanding! Expect familiar faces to show up!

The start of a great storyline from the Best Season EVER of Enterprise, The Forge examines Vulcan culture in a way that hadn't really been seen since Amok Time. HIGHLY recommended!

Sadly, youtube does not have either episode. I did, however, manage to find the official teaser for The Forge:

Both episodes will give us plenty to discuss. See you next week!

Let's kick off a brand new season of Not a Book Club by looking back at how the later Trek series ended!

Saying goodbye to a show is always bittersweet. Or is it? We've all seen "All Good Things", bt what about the rest? Join us as we take a look at the series finales for Deep Space 9, Voyager and Enterprise:

DS9: What You Leave Behind (Season 7, episodes 25 and 26)

VOY: Endgame (Season 7, episodes 25 and 26)

ENT: These Are the Voyages... (Season 4, episode 22)

See you all Monday at 9 EST on Discord!

Our next book club aims to cover some gaps in our film repertoires! So join us as we watch The Films that Vex (and others) NEED to watch!!"

Blazing Saddles (Mel Brooks, 1974)

Harkening back to Mel Brooks' creative golden age, this campy look at Wild West stereotypes proves the old adage "It ain't racist if it's funny!"

The Big Lebowski (Coen Brothers, 1998)

Perhaps THE most quotable film of the late '90s (suck it, Tarantino) the Big Lebowski follows the disenfranchised shenanigans of The Dude. An internet meme before they even existed, this film is the granddaddy of everything comedians like Seth Rogen amd Zach Galifianakis have ever done.

Except, y' know, it's actually FUNNY.

Paul (Greg Mottola, 2011)

So, it's NuScotty and Simon Pegg's friend. And Seth Rogen plays an alien. And stuff. Watch it!

See you all Monday the 20th on discord! All the cool kids are doing it!
