the only pet peeve I have, though it's a small one I swear.. is messing with the new timeline...
certain events, given the way they went back in time..should stay the same..
V'ger , the alien space probe, etc, and they're 5 year mission.. etc... and it looks like they are doing "wrath"
..
I am just wondering mainly, i'm hoping, they'll go into more detail about the Eugenics Wars

Sigh. Let's see:
Mega-Michael Bey explosions and random screaming ... check.
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid iconic jump off cliff ... check.
Superhero-style leaping around lava pits like Revenge of the Sith ... check.
Black leather Matrix trenchcoats and Really Big Scary Guns ... check.
More explosions and screaming ... check.
Dark Knight Rises-clone promo poster ... check.
Happy Feet animated dancing penguins ... check. (Okay, I just threw that last one in there.)
I think I'm going to do like I did with the 2009 movie: ignore the promo trailers, wait for the release, and just go see the show and be pleasantly surprised.

Well, between that statement (Khan not being in) and the teasers saying something along the lines of "threat from within"...
Could it be Garth of Izar? I rule out Gary Mitchell since A) why would he need a gun and B) they already covered him in one of the comics, who they've sworn up and down are part of JJverse hard canon. UNLESS the art is so bad they made him not look like Cumberbatch on purpose.
EDIT: Then again, the comic gave him the silver eyes too... soooo he lost them? Nah. Unless they pull a retcon, don't think it's Mitchell

I too don't think it's Gary Mitchell - as the probe beyond the galaxy hasn't (may not ever) happen in this timeline.
If it is Captain Garth of Izar (from "Whom Gods Destroy") - IMO that would be interesting as he would have the power to shapeshift; assume any identity and really screw with people. <--- I really hope that's it.
Either way, it's a film I'll see either opening day, or opening weekend (Yes, shut up and take my tiicket money, Paramount.)

Garth's the best bet taking into account the "threat from within" that "detonates the fleet." I'm assuming metaphorical detonation. Maybe they added to Garth's original crime by having him attempt a military coup perhaps...
Anyway, I'm doubting it's Khan or Gary Mitchell (who BC could have done magnificently well.)

I agree that if it is an old STO villain, it is probably Garth. It all fits, including their choice of actor. If it was Khan, I think they would have used a more ethnically appropriate actor.
But...there is one nagging thing. According to the link Mark posted, Weller is playing an older version of Cumberbatch's villain. Weller has already been a Star Trek Villain, one from Earth and one that would be an old man at that time; A disciple of Colonel Green (of the eugenics wars) and the leader of the xenophobic Terra First movement that tried to purge Sol of all aliens and destroy SFA in Enterprise.
http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/John_Frederick_Paxton
Also worth noting, it might still be a non-Khan augment as well, because some of those did escape during the Enterprise era as well (by the meddling of an ancestral Sung) which led to the greatest retcon of all trek history.
They have already established that Enterprise in canon in JJ Trek : Scotty was effectively exiled for beaming Archer's beagle into oblivion.
